October Volunteers of the Month – 2nd Chance Employment Youth Job Counselling

Meet the 2nd Chance Youth Job Counselling team! We are pleased to call them our volunteers of the month! They volunteer regularly at our Community Breakfast, at Reception, and in our Food Market and they never come empty handed, often bringing with them food and hygiene items.

The soft skills learned and networking opportunities that open through volunteering sometimes results in jobs and this is certainly true for this group! We asked them a few questions to better understand their volunteer experience here at HOPE House and here’s what they had to say…

What brought you to HOPE House?

The Youth Job Connection program participants wanted to learn more of our community resources and become a helping hand to Wednesday morning breakfast.

What do you like about volunteering at HOPE House?

Our youth participants wanted to take action and engage with members of the community. The positive energy is alive and well at HOPE House and provides us with the opportunity to interact with members of the community, to get some practical work experience and get a true feeling of what it is like to give back. As a group, we always feel appreciated and welcomed by both staff and volunteers alike. We thoroughly enjoy the music playlist in the kitchen as well!

How have you seen HOPE House change lives?

HOPE House has undoubtedly made significant positive changes to those who access their many services. HOPE House has successfully created a welcoming and safe environment for individuals who seek out positive socialization in downtown Guelph. They also help people with their basic needs, food ,clothing access to community resources, respect and genuine kindness.

One of our participants describes the volunteering experience as,
“HOPE House gives people who feel hopeless a chance to feel hopeful”.
